The Witcher Is Being Turned Into A Very Sexy Movie
Geralt of Rivia is your typically grizzly white male protagonist with luxurious hair and a sex addiction. He’s the perfection centrepoint for a Hollywood adaptation.
That’s right, The Witcher is being made into a movie.

In amidst the amorous reception to The Witcher II and The Witcher III the fact that these are based on books and short stories by one Andrzej Sapkowski seems to have been lost. In fact, you may be surprised to know that Sapkowski’s work was adapted into an episodic film called The Hexer way back in 2001 in the IP’s native Poland. That one wasn’t too well received with Sapkowski hating that film, stating when asked for his thoughts on it that he could “answer only with a single word, an obscene, albeit short one.”
This new one can’t receive worse ire than that surely. The Witcher film is slated for a 2017 release with the Sean Daniel Company partnering with Platige Films.
The film will contain many of the characters you’re familiar with but will be more closely based on the themes of the short stories ‘The Witcher’ and ‘Lesser Evil,’ both of which can be found in the Last Wish story collection.
It will be extremely interesting to see how The Witcher plays out as a film given the highly cinematic nature of the games. It would be fantastic if some of the writers over at CD Projekt RED were contracted to pen the script for this given their knowledge of the source material, their understanding of the characters and the fantastic work they’ve done on the series.
As for casting options, I’d like to see Hollywood taking a Girl with the Dragon Tattoo approach and filling the cast with non-Scandinavian or Nordic actors. Brilliant as Rooney Mara’s Lisbeth Salander was it is an outlier here.
Established talents such as Noomi Rapace and Alicia Vikander would make interesting choices while Mads Mikkelsen is the only casting option for Geralt that I am willing to accept.
