The Darth Maul Star Wars Game May Be Given A Next-Gen Second Chance
The timing of this is rather uncanny as just four weeks ago I wrote a feature about five cancelled games that could have been great, and a certain Darth Maul Star Wars game was on the list.
Titled Star Wars: Battle of the Sith Lords the Darth Maul game was in development by Red Fly Studios. In its brief gameplay video it was shown to have some similarities to Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, yet obviously seemed cooler.
Obviously there has been a massive resurgence of the Star Wars franchise thanks to the movie releasing at the end of this year, the hype, the merchandise, the return of Star Wars: Battlefront and all the films still to come.

This has given a new hope (see what I did there?) to fans that Star Wars will recapture its old glory in the gaming scene by delivering quality, exciting titles based in the universe. Games like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Star Wars: Republic Commando, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron and Star Wars: Jedi Knight II Jedi Outcast come to mind.
In the midst of this resurgence is Red Fly Studios, who wants to re-pitch the cancelled Darth Maul game to publisher EA, who controls the Star Wars license and will be making games in the franchise for the foreseeable future.
Red Fly intends to send a demo to EA in order to win them over and get that green light for a Darth Maul game on the current consoles.
“We are currently working on a full next gen demo of all things Maul to show to the powers that be. It’s been a lot of work on our off time,” said Red Fly’s Dan Borth in an AMA.
“We have been burning a candle for this game since it was killed in hopes we can get it turned back on again. IF that is to happen we need to approach EA with a demo that will impress them. I think we have that or are close to it. Still it is completely not up to us.”
However the bad news is that Borth is open to the idea of reskinning the game with another character if it made the game more marketable to consumers.
“Hopefully EA will see the value in us reskinning our combat mechanic to be more in line with what they are thinking for Star Wars if they are not interested in Maul.”
Sure more fans may want to play as Darth Vader or something along those lines, but Red Fly really has an idea here that could turn into a fantastically original Star Wars game. It may not be for all the kids, but hell Star Wars is going to be so damn popular in the years ahead that thousands will buy it for the name alone.
Come on Red Fly. We’re rooting for you here.
