The EGMR Offensive #8: Dawn Of The Force

Welcome to a brand new gaming podcast, which we’re calling The EGMR Offensive.

This week is all (mostly) about trailers, after a whole bunch of them released last week. We’re also taking some time to discuss things only the PC Master Race would care about, but also things only consolefags would care about. It’s another week of pure offence so we hope you’re ready for it. I guess what we’re asking is, do you bleed? … you will.

Here are the topics discussed during this week’s episode:

  • Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
  • Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens
  • Star Wars: Battlefront
  • Market share of Nvidia and AMD in recent years
  • Was Dying Light unfairly reviewed?
  • Questions

Keen on getting offended? Here’s how:

So points 1 and 2 = Lets take shots at Mike based on what he tweets (aka discredit, nice one lawyer Cavie). Lol didn’t care D:. Also, football is love football is life, don’t hate on football.
Point 3 = Geeeeeeeeeeeeez like it was almost a case of Tl;dl.

Anyway I followed you due to the broad shit you tweet about. My entire twitter experience is based on the things I follow (eh, if you have the time and patience and or interest go and see what I follow). I do not follow things that uninterest me. I made sure my timeline is as interesting to me as possible else I wouldn’t ever use it.

I wish twitter had an option that stops certain hashtags/keywords from popping up in your timeline. I could simply block “GamerGate #GamerGate” and I’ll never have to see that cancer on my timeline ever again T_T. In fact I’m going to pitch that idea to them and expect compensation for literally the greatest idea in forever.

    • Marko Thabo Swanepoel

Uh, you do know you can block certain keywords on Twitter? Mute filters, brah. They’ve been around since forever.

    • Michael Matusowsky

I just tried finding this mute feature and you know what?

My question is, what did GamerGate do to offend you so.

    • Michael Matusowsky

It didn’t offend me at all. It’s the fact that it pops up on my timeline when it’s old news and it’s the same old same old same old crap every single time. Like, if there was something NEW in GamerGate then sure, I’m all in. But sadly, no. It’s “Harrassment” 24/7. No thx, don’t care.

    • http://egmr.net/author/cavie Caveshen Rajman

It really isn’t, though. Don’t you think it’s a bit immature to say “I don’t want to see this thing because it’s not relevant to gaming,” when it’s the most relevant thing to gaming in ages? It’s the equivalent of blocking your ears, closing your eyes and screaming “nah nah nana nah, I can’t hear you,” instead of engaging the content. And that’s fine, I respect that decision if it’s yours. But you have to respect the decisions of others as well, man.

    • Michael Matusowsky

I said the same thing about ISIS. Those beheading videos got old really fast.

Also my tolerance for harassment is virtually none. I learned in high school that the best way to deal with bullies is to ignore them because telling the teachers did fuck all. Why do bullies bully? They want a reaction. Don’t give them the reaction and… they get bored and move on with life.

    • http://egmr.net/author/cavie Caveshen Rajman

You mentioned ISIS and you mentioned harassment, and I’m starting to think you don’t actually know about GamerGate, what you think you know about GamerGate.

You’re starting to sound like an evolution-denier now. You see the initial flaws and you start to disbelieve everything else on the pure basis of thinking you’ve seen it all and really, Michael, I can’t help you if that’s your mentality. If you won’t help yourself, then it’s not my job to do it for you.

For future, then, if you don’t want to see #GamerGate stuff, do like my other anti-#GamerGate friends and unfollow me, because I will not stop trying to educate people on both sides, not just a myopic single-sided perspective built on the idea of pure black and pure white.

      My last-ditch attempt: https://medium.com/@meanmrpugface/dear-curious-newcomer-to-gamergate-and-those-who-have-been-here-since-it-began-words-from-a-1fa483778549

I’ve asked about ten times what GG is about and all ten times someone spews some garbage about how some guy decided to write about his girlfriend and then it blew up into this thing about women in gaming and then some other crap about ethics in games journalism and now there’s idiotic feminazis (Brianna Wu lol) who came in and turned it into some feminazi thing. That’s the gist of what I’ve been told. Nothing beyond that. All I see on my timeline whenever something GG is mentioned: Women is a games developer, got death threats. Also Brianna Wu.

I could not careless about the sides. What I would like is a bloody tl;dr version. I don’t care about the miniscule details (if you’re going to explain evolution to someone, are you going to go into the very minute details as well? You’d end up talking for weeks on end). I know you like giving lots of detail but I’m more of a skim reader and if something interests me in the end then I’ll do the minute things on my own. Care to give me a tl;dr? Actually even better: Explain to me like I’m five years old.

EDIT: That link you gave me, the guy rambles on about irrelevant things in his life. That’s what I’m talking about. I don’t care about irrelevant things like that. I’ve just gotten to the part about playing his sisters games before her and already want to close the link because it doesn’t tell me anything important -_-.

      Okay, here’s my best attempt:

#GamerGate is not Quinnspiracy. The Quinnspiracy is what happened when a jealous boyfriend posted about his ex, and revealed how she had relationships with journalists who wrote positively about her game Depression Quest. I condemn the Quinnspiracy; it should not have happened.

But it did. And we can’t ignore the implications of it.

Afterwards, a bunch of sites started talking about gaming being “over” and attacking their readers and so on. Actually telling their own readers to fuck off, in what seemed like a coordinated attack on gamers by ten-ish sites.

THEN, after that happened, #GamerGate came about as a means of fighting back, and addressing the topic of ethics in journalism, that is, declaring your intentions, disclosing your relations, and not being underhanded. Many writers were outed as corrupt, and many (pretty much all) sites amended their site rules and added things like disclosure policies and such, in the time since then.

So #GamerGate has done things, but those who oppose it still believe it to be about harassment, to the point that even when women and people of colour support #GamerGate, they’re condemned as “rape apologists”, “terrorists” and “KKK”.

I entered this thing as a neutral, and I’ve seen some horrendous cases of abuse on both sides. Here: http://egmr.net/2015/03/life-universe-gaming-gamergate-feminism-ethics-harassment-working-together/
If you won’t read it, then at least look at the examples I used. Those were not cherry-picked, and they’re not strawmanning. Those are literally the first images I found when Googling “harassment gamergate” online.

    • http://egmr.net/author/cavie Caveshen Rajman

It’s important also, to remember that neither “side” is innocent here. And the trolls operate on both sides. They are condemned by both sides as well. But ultimately both sides are fighting different things, and looking at GG from different angles. Yours is the typical anti-#GamerGate opinion, ie. that all GG supporters are woman abusers and terrorists.

Marvel and DC must be SUPER rich. they are basically taking over the cinemas and tv.
Also… Playstation! woooohooo! ;) I would never want to own 2 consoles. If I were to win an Xbone, I would wait to play Rise of the TR on it, and then sell it and finally upgrade my PC.

People had a problem with a young woman going for therapy after she was kept prisoner by crazy cult people, had to fight her way free by becoming a killer, and lose some of here closest friends on a hellish island? lol lol lol lol lol
