Steam Branches To Movie Distribution With Today’s Release Of Motivational Growth
You’ve heard of Devolver Digital, publishers of incredible indie games such as Hotline Miami 2, Shadow Warrior and the South African developed Broforce, right? Turns out that on top of being probably the best indie publisher around right now, they’re also about to become the first to publish a film through Steam.
Technically there are already movies available on Steam. Valve’s own Free to Play and the wildly successful Indie Game: The Movie have both been available through the platform for ages, but they’re both documentaries about video games, as are the few other movies on Steam.

So what is this film? Well, it’s called Motivational Growth, and is about as far from gaming documentary as you can get. It stars Jeffrey Combs as a talking fungus known as The Mold who becomes friends with a suicidal recluse. I’m not sure if you caught it by that description, but it’s a comedy. Here’s the wacky synopsis, taken straight from the movie’s Steam page.
After a failed TV set leads to a failed suicide attempt, depressed and reclusive Ian Folivor begins taking life advice from a fungal growth in his filthy bathroom.
A surprisingly smooth talking chunk of aspergillus, The Mold works to win Ian’s trust by helping him clean himself up, remodel his lifestyle and, with luck, make some headway with the girl next door. When Ian begins receiving strange messages from his broken television set, however, the reality of his restyled life begins to crumble, exposing the gruesome and disturbing world into which Ian has actually been cast.
Motivational Growth is directed by Don Thacker, who’s actually also a game developer. He’s currently working on Starr Mazer, a point ‘n click/shmup mash-up that got funded on Kickstarter last month.
It’s interesting that Devolver Digital have chosen to branch to publishing films and on Steam at that. The company’s co-founder, Mike Wilson, said, “We believe the global community of discovery and curation that exists on Steam and had allowed indie game development to flourish could become the best thing to ever happen to digital film distribution as well.”
He may very well be right! Motivational Growth will be available on Steam later tonight. It’ll have a price tag of $8, but will have a 40% off launch sale.
What do you think of being able to buy movies on Steam? You’re already able to purchase music and software on the platform on top of games, so it makes sense that they’d choose to add films to that list. Let us know in the comments below.
