Ubisoft Rebuilt Assassin’s Creed Unity Tech “From Scratch”
Assassin’s Creed Unity, according to Ubisoft, has been in development for four years and this has given the team a lot of time to reinvent a few things and build up the supporting technology from scratch.
Alexandre Amancio, the creative director behind the game, said “Keep in mind, this game has had almost a four year development. Before we even started the content or anything it was almost a year of development of technology and features and stuff like that.”

This pre-dated the game’s official announcement.
“Even before that, we were speculating,” Amancio continued. “And saying, ‘OK, let’s do this and it should be possible, let’s start and we’ll readjust once we start the actual game’.”
Ubisoft hopes to address some of the long-running mechanical flaws in gameplay during this tech overhaul, but Amancio wasn’t specific.
“We know of these things, it’s all a question of the time and complexity of how to fix them. Sometimes it seems like a small thing but when you open the hood it’s like, ‘oh, really, it’s connected to that!’
“So for this game, because it’s the first from the ground up next-gen title, we essentially had to do most of the systems from scratch. Which meant that ‘now we have to re-do that, we might as well do this’ – it was that sort of thing.”
Hopefully that this means Ubisoft will finally fix it’s 19th century stealth mechanics, update its AI, and do something about the frustrating and illogical tail missions and their “out of sight, out of existence” camera mentality. And those are just some of the mechanical and technical flaws Assassin’s Creed has.
Let’s also hope that Ubisoft overhauls its PR, because so far it’s been shoddy, especially with reference to the whole female character debacle. I wrote extensively about the real issue behind that, and how it’s not about forcing the inclusion of female characters.
