I Wish Ubisoft Would Stop Treating Us All Like Idiots
Ubisoft is currently leading the charge for one of the most insufferable things in the gaming industry – nay, life itself. That is treating your customer or fan base as though they’re idiots. While many gamers recognise this and Ubisoft has drawn ire from those in that camp, there are plenty others who have resorted to defending them mostly because they have an attachment to the company and its games. Today I’d like to make a simple request to Ubisoft that I hope gamers can take to heart when dealing with this company that insists on treating people like morons. And that request is for them to just stop.
For the latest examples of Ubisoft being, well, Ubisoft, first there were the lies about Assassin’s Creed Unity and female characters, which I covered in depth in a previous opinion piece. That’s what it was. Bullshit. Lies. My opinion, or rather some of it, was validated by others in the industry in positions to offer counter arguments, such as from a former Assassin’s Creed animator for example. Remember my issue is not with the absence of female characters. No one can tell an artist what they have to do with their art, and forcing the inclusion of female characters destroys the whole purpose. My issue is with Ubisoft’s bullshit. Treating me like I’m stupid when I’m not. So let’s stick to that.

Next up and of course very recently came the Watch Dogs lies. The story here was that a modder found files and settings buried within Watch Dogs’ PC version and simply flicked a switch to make the game look significantly better. What did Ubisoft have to say about it? Well, Ubisoft had the gall to say that it was for “performance” reasons that those settings were turned off, and subsequently released a patch which did little more than counter the mod’s usability. My theory is that Ubisoft didn’t want the PC version to look vastly superior to the console versions and cause an upset. Instead, their faulty reasoning has led to a mod uncovering it anyway, and making them look silly as an upset was caused by people wondering why the options weren’t available in the first place.
As a side point, I’m sorry but isn’t the entire point of PC gaming to get what consoles can’t achieve from games graphically and technically? You have to be an utter moron or a blind fanboy to think any console could match the most expensive PCs. I’m a console and PC gamer so I have more than enough knowledge to tell you that. Consoles strive for optimisation at the highest output while PCs don’t have many limitations when it comes to power. Each player can find the sweet spot for their own rig. I’ve also spoken to people who have used the mod and those settings didn’t really seem to break the game.
So again, more lies. More bullshit. More excuses. More being treated like a sucker. These are just two recent examples though. There are many other incidents in the past of Ubisoft doing this. Like when they said that their hateful DRM was ‘successful’ in reducing piracy, and then proceeded to try and not bring Ghost Recon and I Am Alive to PC because of piracy. Yeah. In fact it was only this year that Ubisoft actually admitted that DRM doesn’t stop piracy. But hey, they managed to bullshit us and made us out to be idiots for years before admitting they bullshitted. But we’re a forgiving bunch, aren’t we?
The above may seem like ranting to some, but it all puts into context many cases of Ubisoft insulting its audience and not having the decency to be upfront about pretty much anything. The big cookie though, and what separates the company from receiving the kind of ire that the likes of Capcom get, is that Ubisoft actually makes good products. For some reason in the gaming industry this gives them a protective shell against any kind of criticism and leads to people thinking with their emotions rather than their heads. The bottom line is that if it were Capcom or Microsoft, I guarantee you that the internet would be up in arms with its hatred at every corner. But because Assassin’s Creed or Far Cry or Watch Dogs is cool, Ubisoft gets a free pass on basically being assholes.
That’s what it comes down to, for me. Ubisoft do make good games. They probably have some of the most exciting studios. But lately they have become obnoxious with their PR and attitudes, and like it is whenever a child starts misbehaving or acting like a right twat, it takes a scolding (or a beating if you’re into that) to set the record straight. My request is very simple. Wrong is wrong. It doesn’t matter who you are or what you’ve done in the past. Just treat us and your fans better. They deserve better than that. Your excuses, your bullshit, are reaching a stage where it’s becoming insufferable.
Dial it back. Think before you make a statement. Stop with the pathetic excuses. Hell, just say nothing. Nothing would be better than the stream of stupid you’re spouting these days. The next time you want to say something in response to a question relating to a sensitive topic, just spend half a second to think how the words will be perceived by others. Maybe then we could focus on your games, and not your attitude and bullshit. I like you, Ubisoft. I like what you do. But I don’t like what you’ve been saying lately, and my only wish is that you stop treating us all like idiots.
