The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt May Just Make Skyrim Look Small
CD Projekt Red and Umbra Software recently held a presentation titled “Solving Visibility and Streaming in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt with Umbra 3″ at the Game Developers Conference, and apparently there was something we overlooked, as pointed out by DualShockers, in the original presentation slides. It was discovered by Reddit user fughp.
The presentation slides suggest that the size of two in-game areas, namely the city of Novigrad and Skellige, are pretty damn huge. Noveigrad is said to measure 8.5 x 8.5 km for a total size of 72,25 square km, and Skellige is 8 x 8 km, which translates to 64 square km. If you sum those two areas together, you’ll get 136,25 square km, which is just above 52 square miles in total.

If this information is accurate, then here comes the scary part. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim’s world, in its entirety, was calculated to be 14.8 square miles in size. That means that Noveigrad and Skillige, two cities in The Witcher 3, are over 3.5 times bigger than Skyrim’s entire map.
Take a moment to let that sink in.
We don’t quite know enough about The Witcher 3 and its world at this point, but back in June last year CD Projekt RED did describe The Witcher 3 as being 20% larger than Skyrim. Whether that was just a rough estimation or The Witcher 3 somehow got even bigger over the course of its development is something we’ll have to find out from CD Projekt RED.
DualShockers reached out to CD Projekt RED, so hopefully we’ll hear more on this issue in the not too distant future. But again, if there is any truth to this information then The Witcher 3 is going to be one hell of a massive game. Not to mention a beautiful one on top of that.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will be out on PC, PS4 and Xbox One in February next year. This was confirmed after CD Projekt RED announced a delay for the game. The delay makes the fact that game designers left the studio an even more curious thing.
