Has Watch Dogs Become Uglier Since We First Saw It?
Watch Dogs fell off the radar last year after it was delayed at the last minute and put into release date limbo. Last week we finally got confirmation of a May 27th release date for Ubisoft’s new IP, but the latest trailer sparked a debate as to whether Watch Dogs had been downgraded visually.
Well someone decided to see if that was true by comparing footage from the very first reveal (which was rendered on a PC dev kit) to footage from PS4 dev kits late last year. While the comparisons aren’t one for one, the differences definitely are startling.

Firstly, where the hell did all the animations go? That last clip at the end shows off my favourite feature of Watch Dogs, namely Aiden’s coat and its glorious physics, but putting it side by side with what we saw in 2012 and what was shown off last year puts a big frown on my face. The same can be said for similar car explosions, with the PC dev kit putting out a glorious, fiery explosion with tons of debris, in comparison to the limp one on the PS4.
Now this could be a matter of platform power, or it could be the face that what we were shown at E3 in 2012 was a small slice of what Ubisoft had back then. Open-worlds are tricky to pull off, and the larger they become the more demanding they are on hardware. This could account for the downgrade we are seeing now, and quite frankly it’s to be expected. What is surprising is that Ubisoft Benelux PR and events manager Tessa Vilyn stated that the game has not changed since 2012.
Maybe she should look at the footage above then? Why not explain to people why you weren’t able to replicate a small demo on a larger scale rather than selling PR lies for once?
