Toby’s Island Is Pokemon Meets Harvest Moon Goodness
Toby’s Island, a 90s Inspired Collect-All-Monsters 2D RPG, from small studio MVisioning offers randomised events, monster evolutions, a tightly woven narrative and a host of other elements all for old school JRPG fans. To say more wouldn’t do it justice, and this was indeed a pleasant surprise to come across. The project is now in the home stretch of its Kickstarter goal of $20,000 (Canadian) and needs all the support it can to achieve the project’s goal.
In the game, the actual island is inhabited by creatures that can join Toby’s party. Toby can train, befriend and use these creatures in battle, in a similar fashion to Pokemon. During your journey in the game you’ll encounter different spirits that can be equipped to your creatures to enhance their abilities and powers. Meeting these spirits is randomised and you’ll encounter different spirits every time you play through the game. Spirits and creatures alike will evolve, with many hidden spirit evolutions for players to discover. The different spirits you encounter throughout the game will inform how the narrative progresses meaning the story will also be affected through randomisation.

Toby’s Island is very much a resource collecting game as well, incorporating farming and building. You build a town around and villagers, merchants and other people will eventually join you. You’ll be collecting resources and farming the land to survive, all reminiscent of games like Harvest Moon from the 90s and contemporary survival roguelikes. The will be extra puzzles and mini-games to keep you interested with fishing, and initiatives to craft more items.
