Oculus VR Now Belongs To Facebook After Massive $2 Billion Deal
While we were all asleep something pretty massive happened over in America. No, Russia hasn’t launched nukes yet. Instead, Facebook seemingly launched nukes at gamers, after the social media giant purchased Oculus VR for a massive $2 billion.
Oculus VR, the makers of the Oculus Rift, will fall under Facebook’s roof in Q2 of this year, after being offered $400 million in cash and 23.1 million in Facebook shares.

It didn’t take long for the Internet to take hold of this news and absolutely butcher the real meaning, and possibilities, behind this. Rants about how Oculus, a crowd funded company, had now sold out filled Twitter feeds everywhere, and even some developers decided to pull their support for the device. Well, at least Notch did.
We were in talks about maybe bringing a version of Minecraft to Oculus. I just cancelled that deal. Facebook creeps me out.

Oculus VR President quickly jumped onto Reddit to try and explain the companies stance on the deal, and what they feel it will allow them to achieve what was previously impossible. Aside from being able to add new features to the Rift with all the financial backing, Oculus could now retail their device at a much lower price. But that doesn’t mean they’re ready to bow down to Facebook’s wishes. Oculus CEO Palmer Lucky had this to say.
If I ever need a Facebook account to use or develop for the Rift, I’m done. You will not need a Facebook account to use or develop for the Rift.
If I ever see Facebook branding on anything that’s not optional, I’m done. Not really reasonable in a literal sense, but I get your drift.
If I ever see ads on anything that I’ve already paid for, I’m done. That is a developer decision, not our decision. If someone wants to sell a game with built-in ads, they will have to deal with the natural consequences.
Echoing those sentiments, Mark Zuckerberg confirmed that, like many of Facebook’s acquisitions, Oculus VR will operate independently from the social media company, with the deal simply allowing the formation of partnerships that were previously not possible.
So guess what, there really is no reason to get all worried about this. Oculus managed to make a product that stands toe to toe with something like Sony’s Morpheus headset, on crowd funding alone. Just imagine what they will be able to do with the device now.
Get off your high horse and support the company that has continuously delivered on their promises. Seriously.
