Post-Apocalyptic Half-Life anyone? Check out Ashen Rift’s Kickstarter!
Ashen Rift currently on Kickstarter, and being developed by Barry Collins, is a post-apocalyptic survival horror set within the wilderness of the Rocky mountains. Fully titled as Ashen Rift: A Man And His Dog, Ashen Rift currently has a few days left on Kickstarter.
The story follows that for the past ten years the world has been ravaged by an anomaly known as The Rift, bringing monstrous aliens to home soil due to scientific irresponsibility and military intervention. You have to journey across this post-apocalyptic landscape in search of The Rift, along with your trusty pit bull Bounder. Your job is to try and stop The Rift before its too late, and that pretty much sums up the story of Ashen Rift.

The gameplay design centres around your character and the dog Bounder. Interaction with your dog is central and is initiated via a circle menu, which has options for commands. Bounder fetches items and can warn of danger, he helps you with resources and managing enemies around you. But he can also alert enemies which means you will always have to be on your guard. Ashen Rift is by no means a trigger happy game and strays diligently into a methodical and slow paced style.
You are encouraged to approach enemies with different tactics, utilising ammunition and weapons when necessary. The key word being “resourcefulness”. On top of which, environments will be destructible allowing for stealthy and indirect approaches in dealing with enemies. In this way, the game is far more methodical and slower paced, focusing on using your surroundings to your benefit and approaching every situation with varied strategies.
The visuals are beautiful and the game feels like it will be restrained in terms of gameplay. Ashen Rift is all about the journey, and is a project which is definitely on my radar.
