An Analysis Of Platform Fanboys
I think most of us are in agreement that platform fanboys are a plague on the gaming landscape. They’re a bunch of bloodsucking locusts that just destroy everything in their wake and the most important thing that they destroy has to be gaming’s credibility. If an open-minded non-gamer looked at an N4G thread and saw the disgusting blind loyalty and elitism on display then it’s perfectly reasonable that they assume gamers are all a bunch of assholes and degenerates. It sickens me how we as gamers try our hardest to educate the public on the value and artistic expression of gaming and then you get a bunch of idiots calling each other cunts because they don’t play on the same electronic box.
While fanboys can die in a hole, I’m still intrigued by their mindset. What trauma has befallen this individual that is calling me a worthless sack of shit because I prefer to game on something that they don’t? This has prompted me to dig a little deeper into the anatomy of each individual fanboy and what their motivations are. Just for the record, I’m not a fanboy of any particular platform whatsoever. I own an Xbox 360, PS4, Nintendo 3DS and a gaming capable laptop with a Steam library. My loyalty is to nothing but games.

Let’s have a look, shall we?
For some reason, this fanboy is probably the most loyal of the bunch. I kind of understand why they have this loyalty too for a certain reason. Sony has been around for a while and many gamers have started their gaming escapades on the first Playstation. What’s the easiest thing to stick to if you want to be the most comfortable? Something you know and have gotten used to. It’s like brushing your teeth in the morning or having your daily cup of coffee. You have gotten so used it that it just happens by itself. What I think has happened to the fanboys is that they have developed these delusions that their chosen brand can do no wrong and in that process they have started to dismiss every other platform altogether.
I can almost guarantee you that most if not all Sony fanboys have ever played on a different platform for an extended amount of time. They just know no better. This is blind loyalty to the max.
Xbox fanboys are a delusional bunch. Microsoft has made a ton of questionable decisions throughout the years, yet the fanboys never seem to see this. Most of the Xbots (or Xboners, as I like to call them now) are online focused gamers that play Call of Duty and Halo for hundreds of hours. Because of this large amount of time that is invested, I would argue that they have developed Stockholm Syndrome in the process. They are being ripped off with subscription fees that still include targeted advertisements, but they just go along with it because they want to play their online games.
Their delusion reached a new height with the whole resolution issue. You had Xbox fanboys arguing that 720p and 30fps is superior than 1080p and 60fps . While I don’t really care for the whole resolution debate, I think it’s rather obvious that a higher number is better than a lower number. Simple math seems to escape these fanboys for some reason. The whole always-online DRM deal was also strong evidence of delusion. Some Xbox fanboys claimed that it was “the future of gaming” and that “if you don’t have an internet connection then you shouldn’t be gaming in the first place”. Pure madness.
I don’t really have a good reason for their delusions. Maybe it’s just another case of blind loyalty. They’re comfortable with their system and they would fight anyone that challenges it. Maybe they have just been scarred by all the 12 year olds swearing their mother consistently in their ear like a choir of demons from Hell and have become husks.
Yes, they exist. They are probably the most passive of all the fanboys because you don’t really hear from them too often. It’s simple why though. They can’t really say that their console has superior graphics or better processing power because anyone with eyes can see that that’s not the case. Regardless, you still get the diehards that defend their brand to death. The most viable reason I can give is their long standing loyalty. Nintendo is the oldest existing console manufacturer and many gamers got their start from the Super Nintendo or the various rip-offs that have graced foreign shores. They have been with the company for years and because of that there’s some nostalgic weight with them with regards to the games they play. They have fond memories of playing Super Mario and would like to capture that enjoyment over and over again.
Thankfully, Nintendo fanboys are just happy to play their games. You won’t often see a Nintendo fanboy calling a Sony fanboy a faggot on a forum. They’re just thankful for their Legend of Zelda fix every now and then which I’m fine with.
The PC Master Race
Probably the most vile of all the fanboys. PC fanboys have this overwhelming sense of entitlement with their system. Of course everyone knows that PC is better for gaming in every way if you have the hardware to support it, but these fanboys want to drill it into your head. I think it’s because of the amount of money and time they have invested into their hardware and they have to find some way to validate it. It’s like buying a million dollar sports car. You’re not going to let it sit in your garage to look at, you want to drive it around as much as possible so that people can see you in it.
PC fanboys also have this sense of superiority around them, but for reasons that I don’t understand. Some have called me an inferior gamer because I game on consoles, yet I have played literally 10 times more games than they have. I get the same experience, it just doesn’t look as smooth or pretty. If a prettier game makes me a better gamer then I will just play Witcher 2 over and over until I die. PC fanboys’ arguments never extend past graphical capabilities most of the time. It’s always framerates and resolution with them and never on the quality of their games. If a PC gamer told me that they can play The Stanley Parable and I can’t then I will be much more inclined to go to their stable, but no, it’s always “my bf4 looks better than yours lol”.
No matter how many times David Cage says it, polygons don’t make games more emotional.
It strikes me as odd how gamers always try to be taken seriously, but then bicker about what box a disc is inserted into. I don’t want to sound like a flower power hippie, but can’t we all just get along? Gaming is amazing no matter where you play. As long as you’re playing good games that you enjoy, it shouldn’t matter which electronic box you choose to do it on.
