Wolf’s Wicked Words: A Ridiculous Venture Into Fishing And Cluttered Ideas
It is easy to overlook or dismiss the mobile games market. I know it’s easy – I’ve done it in the past and more than once at that.
Do not be fooled that every game on a smartphone will be a cavalcade of micro transactions or watered down mess of nifty ideas. You have your copycats. You have your micro transaction-addled shambles. You have games made solely for the purpose to make money and nothing else. You have games made with passion. You have great games. Forget that it is not on your PC, Xbox or PlayStation – if a game is great, you should not care about what platform it is on. You should only worry about the fun and the joyous excess of it.

The Room and The Room 2 are two great games with eerie atmospheres and fun puzzles that keeps ’em craniums a’ workin’. Jetpack Joyride is a humouristic romp filled to the brim with fun and charm. Badland is difficult, but really has you trying just one more time. Ridiculous Fishing is, well..
Ridiculous Fishing is what I’m here to talk about today.
Ridiculous Fishing is one tough nut to crack without superior deductive skills. It is ridiculous and you catch fish.
It’s one damn fine game and I’ll admit that I didn’t see what the fuss was about, but once I’ve bought it to see why people like it, it soon became apparent as to why that is. This is a fun, addictive and well made game. It is simple in its approach – you drop you line into the one of a few waters and your goal is to avoid the fish and see how deep you can go without this turning into a sexual joke. Once you’ve reached the bottom or your line has reached its maximum length while still not resembling something carnal; you have to catch as many fish on your way up where after you fling all the fish into the air and shoot the living fecal matter out of them. You earn money by doing this. The amount of money depends on the species of fish and you buy upgrades and added goodies with this money. It is as simple as that.
That is where the key lies for this game. Simplicity.
When was the last time you played a game, enjoyed it and read about all the other folks enjoying it? Well, let’s see… I cannot recall such a scenario in recent years. This is what I think is why people are never satisfied anymore. There is a genuine lack of simplicity in games. Games are being stuffed with features and sometimes it may be too much features – resulting in a mess and those features being cast aside regardless.
Take a look at a gaming controller from twenty five years ago and a controller today. Directional keys, two additional buttons as well as a start and select button versus a controller of today with 16 buttons. Games have grown and become greater in many areas. Story, combat, stealth, cover systems, graphical prowess and top notch sound and yet, no one person is universally happy with all this progress?
May this be due to a tidal wave of too many features and unknowingly everyone is so spoiled by these games and as a result no game is ever good enough or will ever be good enough?
New hardware continuously enters the fray and there is no flooring the brakes for anyone. Everything has to improve and even with improvement, no one is happy as a result?
Think about this, you drop a line into the water, you reel it back up catching as many fish as possible, avoid the jellyfish and shoot the crap out of them as they are flinged into the air. A simplistic yet beautiful visual style. Straight forward sound effects. All of these minimalistic ideas made and still makes me happy when I play it. Is this the only game that does this? No, of course not. Papers, Please is another example. You check the paperwork of immigrants or citizens and you either approve, decline or detain them. That’s it. Yet, both of these games are simple and wonderfully crafted and you can feel the effort that went into them as you play. Each with one or more emotion-stirring moments.
Think about this.
