Irrational Games, The Studio Behind BioShock, Is No More
Today just turned into the worst nightmare for the majority of Irrational’s staff, the hearts and minds behind games such as System Shock and BioShock, as Ken Levine announced that the studio would be downsizing monumentally.
From today, Irrational will only consist of Ken Levine and 15 other developers, with the rest of the studio being laid off. Essentially, Irrational Games as we know it is no more.

Ken Levine announced a few minutes ago that he would be ” winding down Irrational Games as you know it”, laying off most of the staff that has worked on previous titles. Only 15 employees will remain at the studio as they tackle a new venture, mainly involving narrative driven single-player experiences that also have a lot of replayability. It is unclear what this new project is, or why it required the massive downsize of the entire studio.
Irrational Game will still be partnered with Take-Two, and hence publish their game through them. Ken Levine expressed that he considered leaving the studio behind in order to start this venture, but after talking to Take-Two it was decided that Irrational would be re-purposed to pursue this new venture.
We here at eGamer wish all the best to the many, many employees affected by this, and hope that all the talented minds behind some of the best games in the past decade find work very soon.
