Evolve Is The First Game That Actually Needs Next-Gen
The more I hear about Turtle Rock’s new multiplayer shooter, Evolve, the more I get excited about it. Essentially it’s four players, each with different classes, going up against one other player, controlling an evolving monster that is able to grow and become more powerful in order to take them on.
The game is only scheduled to come to PC, Xbox One and PS4. Many have asked why its skipping current-generation consoles in favour for newer hardware. The simple answer is that Evolve is the first game to actually require next-generation power.

Yes, most games have visuals that could not be replicated on the older consoles, but evolve is the first one that has its gameplay hinge on this. Turtle Rock co-founder and design director Chris Ashton explained how having Evolve on Xbox 360 and PS3 would essentially break the entire experience.
“We were looking at [Xbox 360 and PS3] early on, and there are a couple things to consider for us.” Because Evolve matches begin with lots of hide-and-go-seek, a last-gen version of Evolve simply wouldn’t function properly. The gameplay would be too negatively affected by the hardware.
“We’re out in nature, where there’s trees, bushes, rocks, there’s a lot,” Ashton said. “It’s a high density of foliage and props…. In Evolve, if you fade trees and rocks, now the monster can’t hide. We’ve changed the gameplay.”
So aside from taking away options from the player controlling the massive beast that is roaming the map, Ashton explained that even the wildlife simulation that occurs during every match would probably not function correctly if done on an older, less capable CPU.
“Another thing that was a big one, we’ve got five real players in the game, but we’ve got wildlife, predator and prey. Those are all effectively players in the game. The server, the client, they all need to be synced up. This whole wildlife simulation is going on, and that’s pretty CPU intensive.”
“On PS3 and 360, we [wouldn’t] have that many cycles, so let’s reduce the population — and again we’re affecting the game. We pushed the game into two different games, two different versions. It’s almost like a PSP version of God of War. They’re not one for one, they’re different versions of God of War. That’s what would have happened.”
Personally, this is what next-generation should be all about. Delivering experiences in gameplay that would literally not be possible on older hardware, rather than just visual upgrades of games we’ve already played.
Again I say, I’m extremely excited for Evolved.
