Too Many Players Makes Titanfall “Uncomfortable”
A few days ago it was revealed that Titanfall would be limited to 6v6 players in part due to the need for AI characters for story purposes but also to prevent the game from getting too chaotic. One of the game’s big selling points is how, unlike other modern shooters, players are not restricted to navigating corridors.
Titanfall offers great freedom of movement with very open maps and lots of verticality. The low maximum player count is part of maintaining that freedom and preventign the game from becoming uncomfortable with too people moving around.

Speaking with Polygon, lead designer Justin Hendry said that the fact that players can move in all directions across open maps means anything higher than 12 players is too chaotic.
“The higher the player count, the more uncomfortable the game gets,” he said.
“Unlike in most games where you can sit there and guard the two ways in, in Titanfall the guy can come in through the window right behind you, he can come from the window to your left, he can come from straight ahead, he can come in from the stairway and he can come in from the doorway, or whatever.
“Essentially there are five directions you can get killed from and the higher that player count, the more likely you are to get killed from behind and the more difficult it is to kind of manage your surroundings.”
Hendry also confirmed that the maps can play host to around 50 combatants, that’s including AI and Titan mechs. However, he stressed that the game doesn’t play like other shooters so we shouldn’t judge it by the same yardstick as Call of Duty or Battlefield.
Titanfall is certainly trying something very different with multiplayer and based on reactions thus far, the devs know what they’re doing so trust them when they say that 6v6 is enough.
