Upgrading The HDD Will Speed Up Your Xbox One And PS4
The Xbox One and PS4 both have standard HDD within them, allowing you to store up to 500GB of data on your new consoles. As we’ve already come to see, that’s not too much, but some brave souls have already tried to upgrade their storage.
And it turns out that you can significantly increase the system’s speed by doing this, should you choose an Solid State option.

For those unfamiliar with Solid State Drives, all you need to know is that they’re significantly faster (and more expensive) than the standard HDD, but it seems that they could make your next-gen consoles much, much quicker. YouTube user “Brian Williams” recently did a quick comparison video, which demonstrates the speed differences one can expect when upgrading the Xbox One hard drive, and the results are pretty impressive.
The video above compares the Xbox One’s on-board Samsung OEM 500GB hard drive with a Seagate 1TB hybrid SSHD and a Samsung 500GB EVO SSD. As you can see in the video, the upgrade to a solid state drive decreased the time it took for the Xbox One to boot up by 10%, and even decreased the load time on Call of Duty: Ghosts by a further 20%. That’s pretty substantial for just a hard drive upgrade, and it’s great to see that this is possible.
What isn’t so great is the fact that on the Xbox One, it’s a bit hard to get right, and replacing the Xbox One’s HDD will immediately void your year long warranty. The PS4 also manages to gain some speed from a SSD upgrade, and thankfully Sony has made this process a lot easier.
So if you’re willing to fork out a few extra thousand, even after your new console purchase, then this could be a worthy upgrade. For the other 99% of us, we can just carry on dreaming.
