PS4 Breaks UK Sales Records, Over 2 Million Consoles Sold Worldwide
There’s some pretty big news going around with regards to the success of the PlayStation 4, but personally I don’t find it too surprising.
Firstly, retail sources confirmed that within the first 48 hours on sale, the PS4 broke UK sales records, selling over 250k units. Chart-Track has confirmed that the PS4 is the UK’s fastest selling console in history.

MCV estimated that the UK PS4 sales reached approximately £87m during this period, two days after the console launched on November 29 in the UK.
For comparison sake, the Xbox One sold around 150k units in its first 48 hours on sale.
This means that Sony’s PS4 has smashed a record that was last held by the PlayStation Portable back in September 2005, which sold an estimated 185k units at launch.
Shortly after this announcement of launch sales, Sony clarified in an official press release that an impressive 700k PS4 units were sold in Europe and Australasia from November 29 to December 1.
That’s the UK news done and dusted. But what of a global scale?
Well, the PS4 also released in a total of 32 countries after November 29, although it has yet to release in South Africa, which will happen on December 13.
Sony has announced during the Japanese PlayStation Awards that it has currently sold 2.1 million PS4 consoles as of December 1.
That is exceptional.
Sony sold 1 million consoles during the US launch, smashing US records for the biggest console opening in history. This was then followed by another 1.1 million sales for the PS4’s global launch which expanded to a total of 32 countries worldwide, including Europe and Latin America.
Andrew House took to the PlayStation Blog when he described the sales as “an impressive and record-setting accomplishment” for both Sony and the industry.

Sony has ambitiously set a sales target of 5 million consoles for the end of its financial year, which will draw to a close by late March 2014. So far, they’re looking set to reach that target.
