Gabe Newell Dishes Out Some Wisdom
We all love Gabe Newell but in a recent Google Hangout organised by Code.org he traded PC gamers for actual children in a bid to encourage them to chase their dreams.
Check it out and try not to feel intimidated by phrases such as “prediction markets,” “transactions of significance,” and “embedding processes into tools.” Newell certainly has plenty of wisdom to dispense.

“I learned more in three months with those guys at Microsoft than I did the entire time I was at Harvard,” Newell said, responding to a question about his most prized educational experience. “At Harvard I learned how to drink beer while doing a headstand in the snow. Which, you know, was a useful skill.”
He also sheds some light on why Valve’s flat hierarchy grew to be so unique among the gaming industry in the context of its first project, Half-Life.
“We were trying to learn how to make entertainment products at the same time we were building one. We had to learn a lot. And the way we thought about problems didn’t map to how lots of the people in the game industry thought about problems. We had to kind of had to invent some new rules for our own purposes, so we had some way of making decisions and making tradeoffs.”
And it wouldn’t be a Gabe Newell speech if he didn’t entertain some cyberpunk-sounding technology’s potential role in life:
“Our ability to talk directly to people’s brains is getting better a lot faster and a lot sooner than I expected. There’s research going on right now to directly generate images inside of people’s brains, and it’s not just hey, I’ve got a VGA connector on the back of my skull, but it actually opens fairly science fictiony abilities, fairly soon, in terms of the subjective experience you can create with people.”
