What Exactly Is The Walking Dead: Boston?
With Breaking Bad now concluded, in some style, television studio AMC will obviously need to fill that gap. Doubly so because Mad Men is on its way out as well, leaving just The Walking Dead as their remaining crazy-ratings super-series. So it didn’t come as any real surprise when the announcement came in September that there’d be a new series coming to AMC. It was just a bit of a downer, depending on who you were, to be told exactly what it was.
If you’re fan of The Walking Dead in its current guise then hey, maybe you might like what’s coming. The announcement was that there would be a companion series to The Walking Dead, that is currently in the works as you read this. The new series would feature a new cast with new sets of storylines and a new location, effectively making it entirely its own thing, as compared to the current series which is loosely based on the events of the long-running series of comics. These two series will then join Talking Dead for an AMC zombie-infused three-way.

According to the rumour mill, this new series will be called The Walking Dead: Boston, with the current-running series being retroactively titled The Walking Dead: Georgia from next year. My initial thought was that it would include The Governor as he decides to cut his losses and start fresh somewhere else. If you’ve watched this season’s mid-season finale then you would know that that is in fact not going to be the case, so it really will be a new cast then. Perhaps some cameos at most.
What this means, however, is that together with Better Call Saul, AMC is relying on its current-running favourites to build up a viewcount for new series. To their credit, Breaking Bad’s creator has stayed on for the prequel series Better Call Saul, and Robert Kirkman will be writing The Walking Dead: Boston, if that’s what it actually will be called.
I’m quite intrigued by the new series because it marks the first real clean slate with virtually no comparison from the comics for The Walking Dead, and as we know from the TV series and meeting Daryl Dixon, when Kirkman lets his mind run wild, we get some amazing creations.
I’m going to keep holding out for a TV series of Invincible but in the meantime, how do you feel about another dose of The Walking Dead, each week? Would it be overkill or is it a no-brainer? See what I did there? Personally, I’m looking forward to seeing what happens. I’ve accepted that the series is not about resolution or answers but more about the characters and their attempts at survival. So I’ve made peace with the frustration I used to experience, waiting for an end. What about you?
