Avalanche Studios Hints At Just Cause 3
Just Cause 2 was not a great game but I had a great time playing it and just the rumour of a potential Just Cause 3 is exciting. The team at Avalanche Studios recently took a trip to Costa Rica to “research complex environments for future games.” See also: an excuse to have a cool holiday and bill it as a company expense.
The research and information gathered on the trip will be used in future Avalanche titles such as Mad Max and potentially Just Cause 3 although that’s purely speculative at this point.

“Just Cause 2 is used as an illustration throughout,” reads the video description, “but the reference material collected will prove useful in many of our upcoming open world games.
“In fact, some of the skies that we captured in Costa Rica will make it into Mad Max, which is currently in development at Avalanche Studios in Stockholm.”
Just Cause 2 was set in Southeast Asia on the fictitious island of Panau which was heavily inspired by Costa Rica and while they never say it explicitly the team constantly talks about their research in the context of its importance to Just Cause.
“In the Just Cause games we’re in a tropical paradise,” says Andreas Oberg, associate art director at the studio. “And one really important component of tropical paradises is beaches and water. However, water is one of the most complicated things to simulate in movies and computer games. So, yesterday, we were down at the beach and we were recording the water in super slow motion.
“These are all really interesting questions that we’re doing research about so that we can improve things for the future.”
