“Play The Games, Not The Resolution” – Phil Spencer
Phil Spencer has certainly been very vocal for Microsoft lately. He’s spoken about supporting games for Windows, Xbox One and… well, it’s mostly just been Xbox One talk. One of the little points of contention to come up have been the resolution and frame-rate at which games will run.
PS4 seems to have most games natively at 1080p and some are running at 60 FPS whilst doing that. A big player in this, slightly banal, resolution debate is Call of Duty: Ghosts. The game runs at 60 FPS 1080p on PS4 but 30FPS 720p on Xbox One.

Personally, the difference between 1080p and 720p is nothing to make a huge fuss about but there is a big difference in response time between 60FPS and 30 FPS. It’s not something that should even be up for debate on next-gen if you ask me. Even exclusive titles such as Killzone: Shadow Fall sacrifices 60 FPS for graphical push in its singleplayer.
Spencer has come out guns blazing trying to play down the significance of the news that some Xbox One launch titles will run at a lower resolution than their PS4 counterparts.
“Go look at the games,” Spencer added. “Go play the games and tell us what you think about what they look. Right now, gamers don’t have the games to go play. They can’t walk into their local store and play the games.
“So, it doesn’t really surprise me that they’re going to focus on the specs that they can. I don’t criticise anyone for doing that. In the end, we play the games, not the resolution.
“In absence of me getting my own Xbox One or PS4 games, I’m going to focus on the meme of the day, which happens to be resolutiongate. But I think it’ll blow over as people get to play the games.”
Asked if he was worried that Xbox One might be ‘less powerful’ than the PS4, Spencer replied: “Power is a subjective term. We look at all of the capabilities we put in the box, our investment in cloud, Kinect, and all-in-one entertainment, and our investment in the operating system for fast task-switching.
“We think we’ve built a very powerful system. I don’t think there’s any one vector of power that you can focus on and say we win because this number is bigger than that number. It’s like a car. Is it horsepower? Is it torque? There’s a bunch of things that you look at to see what it’s capable of.
“Our proposition with Xbox One starts with the games: we’ve got a great launch line-up of over 20 games. We’ve got some great franchises, great third-party relationships. And we’ve built a system that natively understands you and your entertainment.”
Both systems are pretty much equal, we saw this already with the raw specs but that’s on paper. Clearly in reality there are parameters that cause Xbox One to have to perform at a slightly lower level than PS4.
I do feel there shouldn’t be any excuse to not have the highest resolution and frame-rate possible but that said, it’s not as big a deal as some people make it out to be. It’s just how the game looks and I don’t know any sane people who buy games solely for the way they look.
