Lord Of The Rings Prequel, Shadow Of Mordor, Announced For Next-Gen
It’s been a while since we’ve had a good Lord of the Rings game. Some may argue that we have yet to get one good one, to which I would say, “Play the fucking Return of the King”. Seriously, that’s easily one of the coolest movie adaptions of the last generation. But this latest LotR title isn’t based on a film. Phew.
Announced yesterday, Shadow of Mordor is a new action adventure prequel to the films and original trilogy, which promises “original, dark story of retribution”. Do I have your attention yet?

Yeah probably not, but you should maybe take note of some of the good early ideas Shadow of Mordor already has. A new system called “Nemesis” will assign attributes to each enemy based on their build, personality and separate traits, making each grunt literally different from the one next to him. This will allow players to craft unique experiences with each enemy, and form memories of unusually difficult enemies that crop up from literally nowhere.
As for the story, players will take control of a ranger that has had his family slain by Sauron’s armies. The twist comes in when you realise that the ranger was also killed, but has managed to be resurrected with special “Wraith Powers” that will allow him to take on the Mordor hordes. So just a little explanation as to why you’ll probably hack down hundreds and thousands during your quest.
Warner’s Samantha Ryan had this to say:
“Players will explore the dark and very personal theme of vengeance in a world where decisions have a consequence, and those consequences persist even after death… The game introduces new gameplay mechanics to the action genre, creating opportunities for emergent and customized gameplay that will be rewarding for players.”
There’s no release window as of yet, but Lord of the Rings: Shadow of Mordor will release for Xbox One and PS4.
