The Bigs Guys At PopCap Have Formed Their Own Studio
It almost sounds weird to say that some of the greatest minds at PopCap have already left their pride and joy to invest in and open a new studio, away from the grips of publisher EA. Introducing AtomJack, a new studio that will hopefully bring PopCap back to some former heights.
And before you take my head off, no, PopCap is not a bad studio. it just feels like they could be so much more considering some of their former successes.

Former PopCap lead producer Allen Murray, art director David Ryan Paul and lead designer Mohan Rajagopalan have formed the studio. Murray’s LinkedIn profile also confirms that he will become CEO as well as studio co-founder. Right now the studio is busy on a title they have funded themselves, which is scheduled for release in 2014 sometime.
“AtomJack is about creating rich and unique game experiences. Our focus is on small to mid-sized digital games that work across multiple platforms, with an eye toward creating a long-term relationship with our players.”
The studio will look outward for funding for future projects, which could also change based on the success of their debut title. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see an AtomJack Kickstarter in the near future.
“One of the most important pieces of successful game development, which is often overlooked, is the value of an existing, experienced team. The three co-founders have decades of combined experience at studios such as Bungie and LucasArts, as well as having worked directly on several titles together such as Plants vs. Zombies 2 at PopCap. We knew we wanted to keep making games, and that we wanted to make them together, so we naturally gravitated toward each other after we became independent.”
It will be very interesting to see what some of the greatest minds at PopCap come up with without EA breathing down their necks every second. Be sure to keep an eye on them.
