rAge 2013: Who And What To Expect
In just a few hours rAge 2013 will start in Johannesburg, South Africa. The event running at the Coca-Cola Dome is the country’s largest gaming expo. It features all of the local distributors and publishers, coupled with vendors, players, fans, cosplayers, and food places.
There’s pretty much everything you could wish for, if you’re into this sort of thing. And while it’s no where as big or extreme as E3 or Gamescom, it’s all we have and we’re always really excited about it. That being said, it’s still a big thing–to us. It still shows most of the latest technology and games. In fact, it does show all of it.
Well, it will this year, anyway.
Starting with some of the technology stuff, one can expect most of the main distributors and hardware participants to be on-site. ASUS with mobile gaming tables, G-Series laptops, and various other ‘Republic of Gamers’ components. ASUS is looking to show what 2014 will hold and that players should try to invest in their technologies.
DELL will show off it’s Alienware merchandise. It intends to do this by partnering with Electronic Arts and Telkom, by sponsoring the Do Gaming Championships. Furthermore, the latest Alienware products will be on display, and this includes the Alienware Aurora unit. Alienware is also going to host a Cosplay competition on the Saturday, whereby the theme is “Alienware” or just “alien-themed cosplay”. Prizes will be available.
Companies such as COREX and MSI will also reveal some of their brand new hardware products.
On more of the peripheral side, expect to see SteelSeries make an important global announcement at 14h50 on Friday, the 4th of October. Flemming Gyldenhammer will show off brand new SteelSeries products, and it seems as if South Africa will be one of the first markets to get an up-close look of what’s on offer.
Roccat generally has their products for sale at the event, whereby Logitech is also expected to be on-site. Consumers will have a wide array of choices available for purchases, and the only thing we can really say is: keep your options open, and try to hustle for good deals. It’s rAge 2013, you’re allowed to.
On the console side of things, Ster Kinekor has announced that the PlayStation 4 will be unveiled at the event, for South Africa. Games includes on the PlayStation side include Knack, #Driveclub, BEYOND: Two Souls, Gran Turismo 6, Batman Arkham Origins, Lego Marvel Heroes and PES 2014. Various PlayStation Vita titles will also be on show.
Microsoft will counter with their own showing of the Xbox One. Alongside the console will be Forza 5, Dead Rising 3 and Ryse – Son of Rome. Of course, Xbox is expected to have a large stand with other games, too.
Nintendo will have 2DS handheld consoles available for use. This is a great opportunity to see whether or not the 2DS is a viable purchase, and whether or not you’d want to invest in such a thing. If you don’t the Wii U as well as 3DS will be on show. Games at the Nintendo stand include Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 8, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between World, and Pokemon X and Y.
Megarom’s has a great, and possibly the most exciting, stand. South Africa’s largest gaming distributor will show more than nine games. These games include Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag, South Park: The Stick of Truth, The Crew, NBA2K14, WWE2K14, F1 2013, Skylanders Swap Force, Final Fantasy Lightening Returns, Dark Souls 2. There will be a behind closed doors gameplay demo of Watch Dogs, hosted by Ubisoft developers Danny Belanger and Stephan Bernard Brousseau.
That’s not it though. Megarom are also planning to show various games on the stage, including, Just Dance 2014, Thief, Murdered Soul Suspect gameplay, Call of Duty: Ghosts, XCOM: Enemy footage, Wildstar and more. A bunch of international representatives from the various studios will be showing their face as well.
Then, on the topic of international representatives, Na`Vi’s Danylo “Dendi” Ishutin from Dota 2 will be at the event. Dendi will have a special presentation for gamers to enjoy.
Megarom is a must-visit for rAge 2013.
Electronic Arts is expected to showcase their usual set of games, namely FIFA 14, possibly Battlefield 4, Need for Speed and others. Expect Sims to be floating around as well.
On the indie side of things, NAG and Make Games SA will showcase various locally-developed games. The fourteen local developers for the event include Free Lives; QCF Design; RuneStorm; RetroEpic Software; Manikin Games; Level 3; Giant Box Games; Rogue Moon Studios; retroFuture; Celestial Games; Steven Tu; Deciduous Games; Made with Monster Love, and Red Dot Lab.
Competitively, Do Gaming will have their Championship at rAge. This includes a lot of South Africa’s top eSports players attending the vent and showing their mettle. It creates a great amount of diversity aside of the expo.
The LAN will also be running as everything in the centre arena. Around 2,000 players all connected, playing games and doing illegal things. Hopefully not watching porn with people sitting next to them.
From the eGamer side of things, we have a somewhat large team attending the event. eGamer also has various interviews planned with the international representatives from the various game studios, as well as with local indie developers and technology distributors.
The team attending rAge 2013 this year includes AG, Azhar, Alessandro, Adam, Caveshen, Marko, Marco, Rudolf, and Peloma. Feel free to come and meet and greet them, as well as have a lengthy chat about whatever suits you.
If you’re going to the event, remember to walk around and see as much as possible. There’s often quick spot-prize giveaways that one can benefit from. It’s worth while to see it all. If you need help or have any questions, stop and ask, someone will always help you out.
Oh–and this isn’t a holistic view of what to expect at rAge. It’s more of a what-to-see on the gaming side of things. There’s a lot more such as retailers, card game enthusiasts and so on at the event.
