What Is The Essence Of Gaming?
Monday was a peculiar day for me. After waking up late and having to skip breakfast I arrived at UCT and opted for coffee over something edible. The first thing I’d eaten all day was a bowl of strawberry cluster cereal with some Oreos that I decided to crush in. Given that and by some reasonably inexplicable series of thoughts I decided to get a bit meta. The question I came up with was this: What is the essence of gaming?
Okay, that’s not all too deep but hey, this is profound by our standards.

What is the most important part of gaming to you? Gameplay, story, narrative, getting lost in an amazingly detailed world? Maybe I should phrase it a little differently. What do you look for in a game or what do you remember most about a game?
Personally I’m inclined to think it’s the narrative but there are countless examples of set-pieces or scenes in games which are ingrained into my memory.
Hey, it could even be a specific experience. You might adore the suspense and atmosphere of a horror or the boundless opportunities in a sandbox game.
