Virtual Reality, Now On PS4
The Oculus Rift is one of the most intriguing and promising pieces of technology in gaming right now. To think a few years ago we were laughing at the 80’s notion of virtual reality. At least I found it quaint, thinking technology would head in a slightly different direction. Sony seems to be sitting pretty on that bandwagon with its very own VR headset for the PS4.
We may see it hit stores as soon as this time next year, alleged development sources have told GamesIndustry International. The headset is tracked using the PlayStation Eye camera which reportedly makes it more accurate than Oculus Rift according to those who have tested it first-hand. There may be some aesthetic barriers with this approach given that rumours suggest prototypes require “ping pong balls” in strategic places to more easily be tracked by PS Eye, similarly with PS Move.

In order to keep PS4 baseline costs down, the VR headset will be sold separately just like the PS Eye and Move however Sony appears to be weighing up how to market the tech. Whether to bill it as a prime differentiator between the Xbox One or merely as an add-on.
Evolution Studios is presently working with the headset for cockpit view in Drive Club.
This could be pretty interesting, especially if Sony delivers something even remotely close to what Oculus Rift is giving us while also getting their stable of developers involved with the tech so that there’s no shortage of games which will utilise the headset.
