A Simple Reason Why This Prominent Indie Chose The PS4 Instead Of The Xbox One
Last week saw the now annual South African Indie festival, A MAZE, close in the heart of Johannesburg bringing an end to a weekend filled with local and international indie pleasure, with games and special guest speakers being flown in from all comers of South Africa, Africa and even Europe. One of the special guest speakers at A MAZE was Vlambeer co-founder Rami Ismail, who along with his fellow co-founder, Jan Willem Nijman, has released close to 15 games over the past three years, including incredible titles such as Ridiculous Fishing and Super Crate Box.
If you still don’t know who Rami Ismail and Vlambeer are, then you should know that the studio is set to release an indie title for the PS4, with Wasteland Kings being announced during the Sony press conference at Gamescom (Rami was in the front row in fact). I got more than enough chances to actually play the game at A MAZE, which was pretty awesome considering how good it feels and looks already, but one question was on my mind from the moment I got to meet Rami personally. And after giving a lecture to Game Design students at Wits University on Monday, I got that chance.

Why did Vlambeer choose the PS4 over the Xbox One? This type of question is still being asked today, in the wake of all the policy reveals and changes that both Microsoft and Sony have made in order to encourage Indie developers to choose their platform. We always hear about some liking one console over the other, while some seem to prefer one set of policies to the rest, but this was a chance to get a first-hand explanation as to why this one studio chose one over the other.
And guess what…I totally forgot to write it down.
Thankfully, I do remember what Rami said, just not exactly the way he said it, so before I get in trouble I’ll just say that this is not a direct quote. At all.
I asked Rami simply why he and JW chose the PS4 over the Xbox One, and his answer was just as simple. According to Rami, the both Sony and Microsoft’s Indie policies empower developers greatly and make it easier for them to be showcased. The fundamental difference lies in who each company is actually looking out for, and in this case Rami believes that the Sony and the PS4 benefit the developer mostly, while the Xbox One’s policies seek to benefit Microsoft more.
And it’s because of that reason that Vlambeer has chosen to side with the PS4, just like a good number of other studios. Nothing more, nothing less.
I should also mention that Rami and a few other international developers were blown away by the amount and sheer quality of games being developed locally. Open your eyes people, it’s happening right under your nose.
Also, Rami is a ninja. I’m not even joking.
