Microsoft May Follow Sony’s Lead With Backwards Compatibility
Although Microsoft does not currently have a hard-and-fast plan for backwards compatibility, the company is looking into implementing a system that is somewhat similar to Sony’s Gaikai cloud.
Microsoft’s Albert Penello was recently interviewed by Gamespot, where the senior director noted that the Azure cloud servers could offer an array of functions and feature sin the future. The only problem is, Microsoft has not yet decided on which features it wants to explore.

When queried on whether or not the Azure cloud could offer backwards compatibility for Xbox games, through streaming, Penello responded with: “Yeah, absolutely. That’s one of the things that makes [the cloud] at the same time both totally interesting and hard to describe to people. Because what the cloud can do is sort of hard to pin. When you say to the customer, we want the box to be connected, we want developers to know that the cloud is there. We’re really not trying to make up some phony thing.
“But there are so many things that the servers can do. Using our Azure cloud servers, sometimes it’s things like voice processing. It could be more complicated things like rendering full games like a Gaikai and delivering it to the box. We just have to figure out how, over time, how much does that cost to deliver, how good is the experience.”
At the launch of next-generation, neither the Xbox One nor the PlayStation 4 will offer backwards compatibility. Sony, however, has only noted that it is planning to implement Gaikai streaming technology at a later stage. Gaikai is a service that will allow gamers to stream previous-generation games on the new console.
That exciting prospect is one feature that set the PlayStation 4 ahead of the Xbox One in terms of games compatibility, however with Microsoft’s ability to do the same, next-generation features are evening out.
