GTA Online Is Just The Beginning For Rockstar

GTA V will feature an online component that lets players co-exist in the same world with their own unique characters and progression. Much like the singleplayer, you are pretty much free to do as you please. Why wake up early on a Sunday morning when you could get together with friends for golf in GTA Online?
The vision for Rockstar North is to start out with the city of Los Santos but expand in size and ambition to eventually have a whole GTA world constructed. The developer hopes to leave the world open-ended for progressive expansion.

Speaking in an interview with Game Informer, Rockstar North president Leslie Benzies explained that Rockstar’s dream is “to create an entire Grand Theft Auto world that consists of everything we’ve done or are going to do then let the player freely move between them.”
Apparently this seed has been germinating for over 11 years and has just now been possible to fully realise.
“Grand Theft Auto Online has been in our minds for a long time – since we started on Grand Theft Auto 3,” he said.
“We’ve always wanted to create a world with the complexity of a single-player Grand Theft Auto game with the addition of real players. We wanted a world where people could spend years without getting bored of playing the same content over and over.
“I think we’ve managed to achieve something very close to our dream.”
That is a grand dream if ever there was one but perhaps when Rockstar brings GTA Online over to next-gen it will be very much a possibility.
“We’ve set this up so there are no limitations. The only limitation is the size of the disc and how much memory we’ve got,” he said. “We could, if we wanted, simulate the entire world, different countries, whatever. Whether we do that or not… But we’ve got a bunch of old stuff that we’re toying with using,” Benzies told CVG after the reveal of GTA Online last month.
Just five more days until GTA V lands, people. Another two weeks before that online hits.
