851 Seconds Of Beyond: Two Souls

Beyond: Two Souls is presently one of the most confusing and promising titles of 2013 all at the same time. That’s based on what we’ve seen thus far so maybe some new gameplay footage will give some clarity, right?

Wrong. This nearly 15 minute gameplay video does little to demystify much of what’s going on but it is a good watch. It involves exciting things such as riding a train. For some reason the footage is pre-alpha even though the game is a month away. Just in case the lack of voices threw you off.

Also, if that bores you why not watch the video below which is part of Quantic Dream’s ‘making of’ series of videos. This one happens to be about visual design.

There is no relevant reason for me quoting the length of the first video in seconds, not even a witty payoff at the end of this article.

This is one of the most weird videos I’ve seen.. Is this even gameplay?? I remeber reading articles whr people critique God of war for its quick time events.. But hell.. This game only has quick time events..!!! Even i’m confused.. I’d rather watch this as a movie than hit buttons here and thr when the screen prompts!!

      • AG_Sonday

I take it you haven’t played Heavy Rain. It’s actually a very intuitive and immersing way of getting player interaction. It seems weird and like it shouldn’t work but it really does.

      • GJ Ram

True i have not played Heavy rain though i still have it in my “To Play” list.. My question is.. how do other games which introduce QTE (Quick Time Events) get criticized but these games don’t?

      • http://egamer.co.za/ Azhar Amien

Because most other games do them badly, or at least did them badly a few years ago. As a poor excuse to take cinematic shortcuts, they’ll make an entire tense sequence a QTE, which could very well have been gameplay. While they thought it was “cinematic”, it downgraded the entire game to “press square to watch the next 15 seconds of the game”. That is not how Heavy Rain works.

Other games started substituting skill and player input out for QTE. There are good ways and bad ways to do them. God of War has always done them perfectly, having only saved them for finishing off enemies brutally and making the button prompts remain the same for each enemy type, so it was not a random irritation and helped the cinematic quality of the kills.

In Heavy Rain, the entire game is built around button prompts and interactivity. It’s an interactive narrative. That’s what Heavy Rain is. Right until the game was released, very few believed it would actually work. No amount of explaining is going to tell you why it works and why it’s so good, so I highly recommend playing it to see why Quantic Dream created something special with the interactive narrative :)

Random question. Where are we getting preorders from and is there a Collectors Edition for this? I’ve only seen special editions being advertised.

      • AG_Sonday

Not sure about pre-orders but I always go with BT. Unfortunately there isn’t a CE by the looks of it.
