Firstly, regarding DLC, Druckmann confirmed that news on single-player DLC for The Last Of Us is coming soon.
“News is on the way about the first DLC drop,” he wrote. “Should hear about it this month.”
When asked whether there will be new story content centered around protagonists Joel and Ellie, Druckmann remained open ended about it, implying that it’s possible there’s more to come from The Last Of Us.
“It’s possible. We’re playing with some ideas, but no direction has been set yet for the next game.”
Druckmann also dropped a hint about Jak and Daxter 4, saying that the fourth installment in the franchise was actually started but then abandoned. When asked if there will be a Jak 4, he simply said:
“No plans. We gave it a shot at the beginning of the project and couldn’t make it work for ourselves.”
Finally, Druckmann spoke of The Last Of Us’ controversial (but in my opinion incredible) ending, saying that even internally it was a bit of a hard sell in the beginning.
“Initially, yeah [it was controversial],” he wrote. “[The] ending we ultimately went with didn’t sit well with some members of the team. Once it was more fleshed out, it became an easier sell. We went through about three or four ideas before finding the ending that worked best for the story we wanted to tell.”
Naughty Dog confirmed back in May that there will be three DLC packs for The Last of Us, which includes two multiplayer packs and one single player pack.
Personally, I don’t want to see another The Last Of Us game. At least, not one about Joel and Ellie. My review showered the game with the highest possible praise, and I felt it ended perfectly. In fact, it was a powerful ending that I still ponder from time to time. It certainly sat with me long after I finished the game. My point is, that story is awesome just as it is. To continue it may ruin what’s there already.
That said, I feel that if there is to be a sequel, then it should revolve around completely different characters within the same world, and introduce a whole new story that does not tie into Joel and Ellie’s. Sure a cameo or some references or little easter eggs here and there would be just fine, but I really don’t want this story to be modified in any way.
Although I may be open to the idea of a prequel game set in the twenty year gap in the story, if convinced that there’s good material to base a game and story on there.
