What Is The Next Big Thing In Gaming?
We’re always finding something to look to as “the next big thing” in pretty much all aspects of life. In fact I’m almost 70% sure I saw an ad for “the next big thing” in washing detergent because apparently people care about that. It may have been a dream but if I’m dreaming about soap then I request to be euthanised.
With regards to next-gen, cloud gaming and rich, social experiences seem to be where things are heading but what about across the board? Is Oculus Rift the future? If you’re from the 80’s then you might think so and the VR headset has certainly impressed the gaming industry. Then we have Virtuix’s Omni with its omnidirectional treadmill which allows real-world movement to translate into in-game movement. A bit like Kinect but with more illusion to it.

It all sounds so promising but I don’t think something which is essentially a peripheral will bring about a renaissance in gaming. Probably not, I could well be wrong. Perhaps the headset which allows you to control games with your mind might be the future in terms of hands-free gaming although the technology needs to be refined a great deal before that can become a reality.
Then again, what if we’ll see the face of gaming change by means of a change in the games themselves.
Maybe developers and publishers will change business models to produce smaller, cheaper titles on a regular basis to cut losses. With narratives and gameplay ever evolving this could even be where we see a new chapter spring from.
Or we could have embedded systems within us for gaming whenever and wherever, possibly through augmented reality displays.
I’m just spitballing but what we really want to know is where you think the next big thing in gaming will come from. More importantly, what will it be?
