Ubisoft Has Something Special To Unveil At Gamescom

Consider this my obligatory mention of Beyond Good & Evil 2.
Okay, now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s continue. Ubisoft has revealed that it will be unveiling a new IP for next-gen at Gamescom next month in Germany. A smaller scale IP called Child of Light (created by Ubisoft Montreal creative director Patrick Plourde) will be revealed prior to that at the European GDC conference.

According to Ubisoft’s latest financial earnings report, this new IP won’t release in the current fiscal year which puts its release window possibly between April 2014 and March 2015.
Ubisoft has a fairly decent track record of coming up with creative, new IP’s such as Watch Dogs and Assassin’s Creed in most recent years. However just remember that whatever they’re unveiling at Gamescom was chosen not just because it is a great concept or feasible idea but because it can be stretched out into a franchise.
It therefore begs the question, is this new IP really the best new idea they had or simply the one with the biggest room for expansion? Similarly, is Beyond Good & Evil as a franchise and universe capable of supporting a franchise with games every two years or so?
