The Last Of Us Originally Had Very Different (And Confusing) Endings
The Last of Us is a spectacular game from famed developers Naughty Dog. Aside from some tight and varied gameplay, the narrative is somewhat the star of the show, with a well crafted and very “human” story that players can relate to, culminating in one of the most emotional and well written endings I have ever seen. But now, Naughty Dog has revealed that that wasn’t always the plan.
Announcing the alternate endings via a post on Twitter, Naughty Dog has confirmed that they plan to go into detail about the other three endings they had in mind for Joel and Ellie. As you can see from the image below, it’s quite different from the one that made the final cut. Be warned, spoilers are about to follow.
- You’ll Be Able To Play (Expensive) PS2 Games On Your PS4 Now | 2 months ago
- Jessica Jones Disempowers Its Male Characters And The Effect Is Refreshing | 2 months ago
- Hell Is 30 000 Deathclaws Tearing Through Boston And It’s Glorious | 2 months ago
- Sony Santa Monica Is Teasing Something Truly Strange | 2 months ago
Now, I don’t know if it’s just me, but doesn’t that look like Tess? Didn’t see die really early on in the narrative? How in the hell is she back, and why is she torturing Joel? Also, where is Ellie with a shiv to the back when you need her?
The ending to the Last of Us that made the cut featured one of the most powerful moments in a game in the past few years, with Joel essentially condemning humankind in order to save the one person who could provide a cure, Ellie. Right at the end, Ellie questions Joel about their escape, asking if he had lied about the Fireflies not needing her anymore. The Last of Us ends with Joel lying Ellie, with players being made aware that Ellie realises this too.
Now that, to me, was the perfect way to end a title like The Last of Us, but I’m also interested to see some of the other ways Naughty Dog thought it could end. The developer will reveal these alternate endings at PAX in a few weeks.
