Grand Theft Auto V Online Won’t Be On The Disc
Last night I attended a rather fun Splinter Cell: Blacklist launch event at Microsoft. The reason this is important is because it meant I missed the live reveal of Grand Theft Auto V’s online component, which looks rather incredible if you ask me. Catching up on all the information as soon as I got home, I came across something that wasn’t really mentioned during the reveal.
That happens to be the fact that the online component of Rockstar’s next epic will not be available at launch. While GTA V will launch worldwide on September 17th, the online part will only be made available via download on October 1st. That’s right, via download.

The download will be free to everyone who has purchased a copy of the game, and will overlap the game’s single-player campaign. Just how big the download will be is unclear at this moment, and whether some files will be pre-loaded on the disc itself is also unclear.
GTA V Online will allow players to create a character that exists in the same world as the three main protagonists, allowing them to interact with a densely populated world in new and interesting ways. The world will also be populated by other players, allowing them to create custom missions that you and others can interact with. It feels like an MMO that’s not being called an MMO basically.
And don’t get me wrong, the fact that it’s a separate download doesn’t make it any less incredible, it’s just something for those without uncapped connections to consider. Maybe that’s why there isn’t really a big deal being made about it anywhere else.
