Gamescom 2013: A Brief Update On Rainbow 6: Patriots
A while back it was rumoured that Ubisoft had effectively put the latest entry into the Rainbow 6 franchise on hold, with an underwhelming lack of information on Patriots. After some time, Ubisoft confirmed that Rainbow 6: Patriots was still being worked on, but that the game was undergoing some large changes. Yesterday at Gamescom, Ubisoft executive director Alain Corre gave a little update on their progress with these changes.
Speaking to IGN, Corre reiterated that the next Rainbow 6 was still being worked on, and that the project has in no way been cancelled or put on hold.

“On Rainbow 6, it’s still cooking. It’s an important franchise for Ubisoft. We want to make sure, on this one, like all the other games we’re working on, that we bring it when we feel it’s perfect.”
When questioned on the changes being made and whether or not the title “Patriots” would still be present when Ubisoft decide to finally show the game off again, Corre was a bit more vague.
“We can’t say yet. We’re iterating. What we want is to have a compelling story. We want people who play the next Rainbow 6 to be astonished, to be very pleased with what they see. You’ve seen that the improvement in games over the last few years has been exponential. We have to reflect that improvement in quality. That’s what we’re doing on all our games.”
“What we have to do, and it’s something that is very important for us, is that we bring a new iteration when we believe that we have enough creativity, enough innovation, to make something worth waiting for. On some games, it happens more often. Creation is not an exact science. When we’re happy with what we see, when we think we can bring something new to gamers, then we say, ‘okay, this is a good time to release it.’”
It was confirmed at E3 that Rainbow 6: Patriots had shifted over to next-gen hardware, so it might still be a long time before we get to see it in action again. That said, Ubisoft seem to be taking a more cautious approach rather than just releasing a sequel that would probably disappoint fans.
My bet? Look out for the next Rainbow 6 at E3 next year. I highly doubt we’ll see anything significant before then.
