Valve Is Helping Prospective Game Designers Get Into The Industry Pipeline
With a company name like Valve, it’s hard to run out of related words which can be used for subsidiary projects. We already have Steam but now we have the Piepline Program too. The program aims to help teenagers who are interested in getting into the video game design by answering their pertinent questions and engaging with them through some unconventional practical experience.
Long-term the program could benefit Valve by having their own production line of homegrown developers. It’s an experiment from a company which usually hires experienced industry veterans and the idea behind hiring a group of eager teens is to, “see if we can take a group of high school students with minimal work experience and train them in the skills and methods necessary to be successful at a company like Valve.” The teenagers will then share their experience and knowledge online on the Pipeline website.

I think this is a great way to not only give prospective game designers insight into the industry but possibly assist them in finding tertiary education. back in 2011 I researched game design as a prospective option but the exposure it gets as potential avenue of tertiary education is appalling. WITS started offering a dedicated degree in game design last year but the previous year there was no mention of this and it didn’t even appear in the list of degrees offered by the WITS engineering faculty.
It’s a curious experiment from Valve, one that will surely pay off given the rapid growth of the gaming industry over the past few years and the way it has shifted into mainstream focus. This could also give Valve the edge on bringing in fresh talent brimming with new ideas.
