Ubisoft Aims To Create Games That Are Always Online
Apart from creating a franchise out of everything, Ubisoft wants to make games always online, too. And while consumers have already dodged a bullet with Microsoft’s policy reversals, this sort of practice seems like it will be more and more common in the future.

At the moment, Ubisoft is moving towards open-world games. The company believes that open-world is where they will find the most success. The company’s open-world requirements will, and can, be seen in the likes of Assassin’s Creed, Watch Dogs and even The Division.
In an interview with Polygon, Ubisoft creative director Julian Gerighty said that each title needs to meet standards set forward by the company’s editorial department. The Ubisoft editorial department is currently big into open-world experiences. Ubisoft feels that this sort of setting is what gamers want, as the experience is somewhat unlimited and wider.
Following an open-world experience is the amalgamation of single- and multiplayer experiences. This sort of experience, however, requires that internet is always-on. Ubisoft will need to not only monitor players, but also have a constant connection so that players can come and go as they please, in a world filled with various other players.
An MMO style, perhaps?
Gerighty believes that the industry will move to this sort of practice soon, as it is the only way to achieve “open, living worlds.”
While Ubisoft thinks that players want to be always online–which we have learnt is not the case–will majority of publishers support this view as well?
Microsoft and Sony seemed to be somewhat unsuccessful in their bid to keep things online. However, what choice do gamers have if the publishers force this through their games itself?
It feels that no matter what happens in the industry, gamers are slaves to publishers–as are console manufacturers.
