Optional In-Game Bantering
“Something odd happened to me the other day. It began as an ordinary day and nothing seemed out of the out of place. I awoke to the sounds of the surreal variations of our local bird-chirpings with the sun peeking into my quarters at just the correct angle for me to acknowledge the fact that this is going to be a superb day. I washed up and prepared myself for my labour work as a lumberjack. I made my way out of the house, greeting my neighbors walking past me alongside the dirt road. Before I knew it, I was at the lumberyard and my fellow workers were already chipping away at the silent guardians that inhabited the nearby forest. When the sun slapped me directly from above I realised that it was already mid day.
My fellow workers and I were conversing about our own occurrences from the past weekend as we noticed an outlander staring at us with blank eyes and as blank as they were, they were looking at us with certain prospect. I carried on with my workings and as the awkward moments began to feel more and more spread out, I looked back in his direction. There he was; still staring…

Who is this man? An uneasy tingling feeling went down my spine due my lack of knowledge of him and his intentions. He just stood there and soaked in our every word as if he was feeding on them.
When we eventually ran out of material for out conversations he ran off to slaughter some chickens close-by and yelling at them with what sounded to be some curses from a Southern foreign language. To this day, I do not know what his story and intention was…”
Yes, it’s us.
I’m one of those gamers that will persistently stand alongside various NPC’s and listen to all their dialogue on offer. This is, however, something that not all gamers do.
So many games out there on the horizon that is the gaming industry contains a copious amount of dialogue that will go amiss if you just walk past certain non-player characters; dead-set on your goal.
All these gaming world are fictitious and that is a major part of the fun, but if we were to examine the things we do, like staring at a bunch of NPC’s and listening to all of their dialogue; be it about their current doings or the current locale, we must admit at some time, that it is somewhat creepy.
Recent games where I stood and listened to pretty much every characters bantering were Metro: Last Light, BioShock Infinite (Battleship Bay, anyone?), the absurd instances in Deadpool, Dishonored and pretty much all the Assassin’s Creed games. This does, however, add a whole lot of time to the game and not everyone will have the luxurious time to do so. I, myself, have fewer and fewer time to play games.
This does, without a doubt, add a whole lot of optional content for those who take the time to listen. Not all of these will be as extravagant, but one cannot deny the feeling of discovering a line of dialogue that made you raise an eyebrow or crack a smile.
When I have the time, I’ll gladly be the ghoulish guy standing and listening to every lamb ready for the slaughter along my way. Breathing heavily as I do so.
