Confusion Arises Over Diablo III On Xbox One
Confusion has arisen for us regarding the apparent Xbox One version of Diablo III.
Earlier this year it was seemingly revealed that Diablo III would be arriving on Xbox One, and many news outlets around the world reported it and started rolling with it. Previously, it was sort of assumed that Blizzard had an exclusive partnership with Sony, as the collaberation was announced at the PS4 reveal and no mention of an Xbox One version was made until much later.

Now, a full interview regarding the game with Josh Mosqueira, Travis Day and Wyatt Cheng was released recently, via DiabloFans. And the site clarifies that no official announcements regarding an Xbox One version of Diablo III were made, and the developers have not yet received dev kits for the console. Their ‘next-generation’ references were only pertaining to the PS4 version of the game.
In the interview, Mosqueira spoke about the next-gen version of Diablo III, saying, “in the last couple of weeks we deployed all the PS4 kits out and we’re really starting the really cool work of getting the engine up and running and the designers are starting to look at the controller and some of the new social features the PS4 is focused on.”
He went on to talk about how the team is excited for the DualShock 4 controller, “especially the Track Pad,” and he hopes “maybe we can do something cool with some of the skills” on it.
Furthermore, Mosqueira explained why the PS4 version is only releasing in 2014:
“We thought that it’s really important we stagger development, so that we focus first on the PC, then to focus on current-gen and then – now that that’s done – we’re really looking at how to make it to the next-gen. Always making sure we’re making the right decisions to make each of the platforms really take advantage of what makes those platforms unique and special.”
Also, a PlayStation Vita or portable version of the game is unlikely for now, because “right now our hands are pretty full just tackling PC and console.”
Now, this news confuses me a little. True, it wasn’t officially confirmed that there would be an Xbox One version, but I briefly went through the interview and didn’t see any mention of the developers not receiving Xbox One kits. Furthermore, the game is going to be out on PS3 and Xbox 360 on September 3 this year, so why would an Xbox One version be off the cards?
Is there some exclusive next-gen deal with Sony? Have the developers just not received Xbox One dev kits? Are they focusing on the PS4 version first? I really don’t know at this point.
For now, I choose to believe that there will be an Xbox One version of the game, but an announcement hasn’t been made yet. So for now we can only confirm a PS4 version.
