Whatever You Do, Do Not Update Your PS3 Today [Update]
I know I know, not exactly the calming news you like to wake up to, but hey, it’s better than innocently turning on your PS3, hitting update and watching in horror as your console then fails to boot at all, right?
So today Sony released firmware update 4.45, which is supposed to bring a whole new set of features to the PS3, including an option to turn off trophy notification (um, fucking finally right?). Thing is, it seems to be bricking a lot of people’s consoles. A quick trip to the Sony forums reveals that this is far from an isolated occurrence, so you might want to think twice before hitting that update prompt.

Apparently a great number of users are being locked out of their consoles completely, with the PS3 getting stuck on the boot-up “ribbon” screen. Now, I wouldn’t even know where to begin fixing this problem if this happened to me, because how are you supposed to rollback you update if you can’t even get to the main menu? It’s a bit of a nightmare.
So, in short, be patient. Sony is probably hard at work sorting out the issue and then will probably have their hands full trying to figure out how affected users can get their console back.
Update: Sony has pulled the update from their servers and will announce when it has been fixed and is safe for download.
