Ubisoft CEO Calls For Digital Sales Transparency
Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has recently spoken about digital sales, and the matter of the figures being made public. He is of the belief that the industry will benefit if they are indeed available for all to see.
Guillemot, speaking with GamesIndustry, added his opinion to that of ESA boss Michael Gallagher, who recently suggested that digital sales transparency would boost the industry.

“[Digital sales transparency] gives all the industry better visibility on what’s happening. And not just the industry, but all the supporters of the industry and the financial community, as well,” Guillemot said.
“So we need to have more information to help the industry continue to grow.”
At the moment, most information in this regard is acquired by analysts and the NPD’s monthly sales reports, but neither have much to share on digital sales. This makes it very difficult for the industry to determine how digital sales are doing. Publishers themselves do not tend to go into specifics when quarterly reports are released. In fact, information in generational about the financial health of the industry is very hard to come by. Heck, we can barely find out about developer budgets for games.
Guillemot has said it’s time to break the habit of keeping digital sales figures close to the chest.
“When you can, you keep all your secrets. Everybody feels that if the other guys knew where they were getting their money from, competitors would jump on that. Which is true,” he conceded.
“But what we’ve seen is that very often, if you receive as much information as you give, it’s not negative.”
Almost as if to practice what he preaches, Guillemot revealed that Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon sold 500,000 copies in its first two months of availability, and it increased sales of Far Cry 3.
