E3 2013: MGS V To Have Multiplayer, User-Created Missions And A Big Surprise
We saw some really spectacular footage of Metal Gear Solid V but the game still has some surprises up its sleeve. The game will feature multiplayer, user-generated missions and some surprises along the way.
There will be a new version of Metal Gear Online developed by Kojima Productions and the studio’s new Los Angeles arm. Speaking with CVG, Hideo Kojima said, “Yes, we plan on creating Metal Gear Online. Multiplayer right now is being created at our LA studio as well as us. We’re working closely to create a vast multiplayer for all the fans.”

The game will also feature user-generated content within the world. Remember MGS V is open-world. It will thus operate in a similar way to inFamous 2 whereby users can create missions and they will appear on other player’s maps. There will also be functionality for smartphones and tablets.
“The first reason why I wanted to go open-world is because I wanted to create a world that had a lot of freedom and allowed users to create their own gameplay,” said Kojima.
“The other reason for the game going open-world is that we wanted to use multiple devices for this game,” he continued. “So using tablets and smart phones you can also enjoy MGSV and create user-generated missions within the world. That’s another reason we had to go open-world – if it was linear we wouldn’t be able to do that,” Kojima revealed.
He didn’t go into details but the idea of being able to use the MGS world and mechanics to craft your own missions is really promising.
Kojima also promises some surprises. The series is no stranger to surprises and subtly breaking the fourth wall with characters such as Psycho Mantis.
Speaking with CVG, Kojima hinted that Metal Gear Solid 5 will have new surprises in store for MGS fans – something which he says ‘movies can’t do’.
“Specifically for the next-gen and Metal Gear Solid V, it’s not necessarily about breaking the fourth wall, but we do have a big surprise for the players in this game,” Kojima told CVG when quizzed on unique uses of next-gen hardware and controller interfaces.
“We have challenged and pushed ourselves with something that movies can’t do but only games can do. It hasn’t been done before,” he said.
Kojima was also asked about his interest in Kinect and features such as reading a player’s heartbeat.
“I’m very interested in that stuff whether it be the facial expression readings or something else,” he replied. “But we’re having a hard time with that and we’re not sure if we’ll be able to implement something for MGSV. But we’re still looking at it and are really interested in the new Kinect.”
Well that’s all he has to say for now and it sounds like Kojima is really stepping things up and expanding with MGS V. Hopefully we’ll see all these things in action soon.
