EA’s Frostbite 3 Engine Won’t Support Wii U
What is this, hate on Wii U day? Seems like it. Just after discovering that Avalanche Studios, the developers of Just Cause, can’t find any use for their Wii U dev kits, now we’re learning that EA won’t offer Wii U support with the Frostbite Engine 3, because it takes development time, and stuff.
In a presentation by DICE technical development director Stefan Boberg, uncovered by the good people at NEOGaf, it was revealed that EA has 15 titles planned that will use the Frostbite 3 engine. Some of the games, like Dragon Age III: Inquisition and Battlefield 4, are already known.

EA also confirmed during its earnings call that Command and Conquer Generals and the upcoming Star Wars games would be powered by Frostbite 3.
However, here’s the interesting part. Despite EA making Frostbite 3 its leading engine and dishing it out to its major titles, the engine actually doesn’t support the Wii U, which means that EA’s major titles won’t be appearing on Nintendo’s console.
“We right now don’t have support for the Wii U in the Frostbite engine. The reason for that is it takes development time. What should we focus on to create the best possible Battlefield experience? We are now focused on PC and the current-gen platforms, and then there might be other platforms in the future that we can’t talk about,” Patrick Bach, DICE executive producer, told Eurogamer at GDC.
“[Frostbite 3] has never been running on WiiU. We did some tests with not too promising results with [Frostbite 2] and chose not to go down that path,” Johan Andersson, DICE technical director, tweeted in response to a fan’s tweet.
I always found the Wii U’s “mainstream” game support to be more of a case of “me too!” rather than a genuine selling point for the device, but the rate at which it’s getting snubbed by developers certainly must be a worry for fans. I mean, Nintendo will always have its own unique market, the market it has catered for since the beginning of potato, so it won’t have a huge cause for concern. But so far it’s attempt to branch out to mainstream titles isn’t going so well.
