No Saints Row 4 Or Dead Island: Riptide For Wii U
The Wii U might be the most powerful console around at the moment but it’s current-gen v1.5 rather then an early entrant into next-gen. As such some developers seem remiss to develop for it and publishers appear reluctant to spend extra money on creating a Wii U version.
One such publisher is Deep Silver. As such, it’s upcoming titles Dead Island: Riptide and Saints Row 4 will not find their way onto the Wii U. In an interview, Riptide’s creative producer Alexander Toplansky claimed that to make the game work on the Wii U Techland would have to port or rebuild the engine. Porting seems obvious but a rebuild would be unnecessary unless they were looking to maximise Wii U’s capabilities.

Speaking in an interview with Digital Spy (via Polygon), Toplansky said while Wii U development hasn’t been “categorically” ruled out in the future, the team wanted to instead refine the current engine for Riptide before tackling a new console.
“One of the opportunities we had for Riptide was to continue the development of the engine, and really improve it and make a lot of refinements,” he said. “The things that are required to bring something to a new platform, you need to either really get to be integrating it deep into the engine, or you’ve got to [do] a port.
“Neither one of those was a satisfactory outcome for us, so we decided to do what we got platform-wise and just make sure that we can deliver the best experience we can.”
Dead Island: Riptide is out in April while Saints Row 4 is set for an August release.
