This Week In Indie: Chaos On Deponia, Grimind And Pid
Welcome to your weekly dose of indie goodness. This week we take a look at some indie games that are hitting the market. With Chaos on Deponia and Pid being the exceptions because they are already out, but deserve some attention likewise. We’ll also be reviewing Chaos on Deponia in the near future, so look out for that. So let’s get on with the show.
The first game I decided that we should take a look at is Chaos on Deponia which is the sequel to the critically acclaimed Deponia, which I reviewed. I felt the original game was classic in every sense of the word, and so to hear of a sequel so soon is great news. This is what Daedalic Entertainment had to say about the story this time around:
Rufus’s home planet Deponia is a giant scrapyard and in addition the Elysian council just gave the order to demolish it. Only the beautiful Goal could save Deponia and stop the explosion. But Goal is stuck with Rufus on the swimming black market which is the biggest rat whole. Furthermore her brain implant – which holds the codes that assure a save journey to Elysium seems to be damaged. At least it’s not just a saying, that you can get everything on the swimming black market. Even a brain surgery. But after mild complications Rufus finds Goal’s mind split into three different personalities. Now the chaos is complete.
Chaos on Deponia can be bought on Steam. The game looks brilliant visually, as Daedalic Entertainment’s adventure games always do. If you enjoy games from the genre then this will definitely be for you.
Another indie game which has been released for both Steam and Xbox 360 is Pid, a retro inspired puzzle platformer with strong art direction. In the game, you play a young schoolboy who has to overcome various obstacles with a beam-manipulator tool at his disposal. The art direction for the game is amazing. But the story is equally interesting as the developers, Might and Delight, divulged when explaining the basic premise which follows that:
A young boy named Kurt finds himself stranded on a peculiar planet, and he must find his way home. Finding help from unlikely allies and the curious tools in his backpack, Kurt must use gravity-defying beams to conquer every platform and solve every puzzle on this strange journey. Featuring over 12 hours of action-adventure gameplay and fully-realized co-op, players are poised to experience a beautiful world set to an evocative soundtrack. With twenty-two different locations, dozens of foes and hundreds of secrets, Pid is like your world… only different.
This is definitely a game I’ll be trying to get for review and looks to be one of the most interesting indie platformers released this year. Anyone will be able to play the game as it will be available on all platforms including XBLA, Steam and PSN. So you have no excuse not to support it, if you like the game at all.
There is another intriguing indie platformer releasing which builds on the mechanics of Limbo with greater innovation in some areas, and it’s called Grimind. The game is slightly more colourful and has a greater range of puzzles on show than seen in Limbo. Of course all the puzzles are physics based and nearly everything on the map can be dragged, dropped or used in some way to overcome obstacles. Whilst Limbo had a silent protagonist, the narrative in Pid will be relayed to you by the character you play as in Grimind, who has an unusual look to him. The design of the game is awesome and I like the choice of soundtrack. The developer, Pawel Mogila, had this to say about the game:
Grimind is a 2D physics based adventure, platform game in horror/creepy theme. Grimind casts you into forgotten caves and ancient crypts, without memories. While being there you must to demonstrate big manual skills to pass obstacles and solve non trivial puzzles to get out of scary environment and additionally remind yourself or even discover who you really are and what are doing there alone – but is it sure… that you are there… alone?
Grimind looks like it will have a variety of options and ways in which to approach puzzles which is great. I’m really looking forward to seeing where this game goes.
