When I first heard of this DLC, I was crawling up the rafters with excitement. Not only is it an add-on to the game I’ve been playing for hours upon hours, but it’s also pirate themed. Do you have any idea how epic that sounds? I was making plans to cut off my leg and eyeball just so I can don a peg leg and eye-patch respectively. I figured that might be a tad bit too violent so I just waited for the imminent release of Captain Scarlett And Her Pirate’s Booty which will now be called Pirate’s Booty because of painfully obvious reasons.
You start off fast-travelling to the quiet coastal town of Oasis. Not long after you step foot into the town you get attacked by freaking pirates. These guys go all out with eye-patches, pirate hats and the usual pirate outfit. It’s all very surreal the first time you encounter this strange phenomenon. After cleaning the decks with the pirate horde you get greeted by a funny little man called Shade. Shade is strange, to say the absolute bare minimum. The town of Oasis all died of dehydration and Shade put microphones next to their corpses so that they can “talk” and meanwhile it’s just Shade that does the talking. That’s just one of the first weird and wacky instances you’ll experience in this DLC pack. Trust me when I say: there are a lot more.
The gameplay is still the same Borderlands 2 we know and love and nothing significant has changed. The enemies can be quite unforgiving if you don’t use the correct elemental type or focus on certain weak spots. Players on their second playthrough will have a bit of a hard time because even though I have the most powerful guns in the game, I still struggled at some points. The level design can be excruciatingly confusing at times and can frustrate almost anybody. My co-op partners and I got stuck in one level for a good 30 minutes before finding the path we had to go through. The levels themselves are varied and look amazing, but the confusing design and amount of dead ends can become a huge problem.
Pirate’s Booty is packed with new stuff for you to discover. I’ll give one example you will understand of the epicosity of things you can receive. You get a headmod for your Gunzerker that is a skull with glowing green eyes, a beard and a pirate hat. You can’t get more awesome than that really. The story is about 3-4 hours long dependent on your skill level and how much exploration you end up doing and the numerous side-missions add on another 4-5 hours on top of that. Great value for money. You also get the new vehicle type called a Skiff that is basically a hoverboat. Some people might have a tough time getting used to its handling, but after a while you will be sailing the Seven Sands with no effort at all.
There are also new “Invincible” enemies for you to fight and, believe me when I say, they are fucking difficult. Even if you have 4 level 50 characters with the best weapons and equipment available in the game, you will still have a very tough time. Get used to dying a lot if you plan to take on these monstrosities. They are also the only creatures that drop the new Seraph Crystals that is a new form of currency with which you can buy extremely rare and unique weapons.
Pirate’s Booty is all a DLC pack should be. Hours of added entertainment, new locations, new enemies, new items and it has goddamn pirates. Do I seriously need to say any more than I have?
