Gearbox Honors A Late Borderlands Fan In Their Sequel
The name Michael Mamaril has become somewhat of a legend in the gaming community. Michael was a 22-year-old gamer who tragically lost his life to cancer last year. He was a massive Borderlands fan, and Gearbox sent out an extremely touching eulogy to his family late last year when he died. Sony even caught wind of the story and created one of the most touching tributes to a gamer possible. Now, in order to honor Michael and immortalize him in gaming history, Gearbox has added him into Borderlands 2 as a non-playable character.
Just days before the launch of Borderlands 2, Gearbox unveiled exactly what role Michael will play in their sequel. Players will encounter Michael in a town called Sanctuary, which serves as a post where players can purchase guns and ammo. During each conversation with Michael, players will receive a rare piece of loot, as well as an achievement/trophy called “Tribute to a Vault Hunter.”

It’s a touching sentiment from Gearbox and just goes to show that there are still some really good people out in this world. You can check out the video tribute Sony produced for Michael last year as well, and be sure to look out for him when Borderlands 2 drops this Friday for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
Happy looting, wherever you are Michael.
