Are You An Excessive Gamer? Apparently You’re More Depressed

Early results from an Australian study reveals that gamers who play more excessively than others tend to show higher levels of depression and anxiety. The study is currently being conducted by Daniel Loton at the Victoria University.
Accord to Loton, the study monitors “academic results, relationships and physical and mental health” between two different groups of gamers — those who play more than 21 hours per week and those who play less than 21 hours per week.

So far the study has found that those who play more than 21 hours per week are 25% more depressed and 15% more anxious than the others. Then, it was found that these gamers use games as a “coping mechanism” to escape from problems.
While this is all relatively new information to us, Loton has noted that gamers have — in the past — shown higher levels of stress, anxiety and depression.
“Most alarming was that excessive gamers scored more than half the maximum measure for each and enough to determine clinical significance,” he noted.
Furthermore, reports have not yet determined how serious the problems are, or whether excessive gaming is even the reason for depression and anxiety. In fact, Loton has found that excessive gamers out-perform their own expectations academically.
And while this might come as a shock to you, we’d like to remind you that Australia don’t have big-boy games. We’d also be depressed if they took age restricted 15+ games away from us.
